PROFESSOR ELIZABETH WELLS, EXHIBITION CURATOR

Liz Wells writes and lectures on photography practices. Her book, Land Matters: Landscape Photography, Culture and Identity (I.B. Tauris, 2011) offers a contemporary critique of photography relating to land and environment. Exhibitions she has curated include Facing East, Contemporary Landscape Photography from Baltic Areas ­ A text + work exhibition, AUB (UK tour 2004-2007), Chrystel Lebas and Sofija Silvia in Conversations on Nature (Rijeka, Croatia, 2011), Sense of Place (BOZAR, Brussels, June 2012) and Futureland Now (Laing Gallery, Newcastle, 2012). She is editor of The Photography Reader (Routledge, 2003) and of Photography: A Critical Introduction (Routledge, 2009 4th Ed.), and is also co-editor of Photographies (Routledge Journals). She is Professor in Photographic Culture, Faculty of Arts, Plymouth University, UK and convenes the research group for Land/Water and the Visual Arts.

PHILIP HUGHES, EXHIBITION ARTIST

Philip Hughes is a painter with a special interest in archaeology, topography and maps. His representation of the land can be seen in two main themes: walking through the land, tracks, marks on tracks; and seen from above, showing the structure of the land and patterns of man’s intervention. He has made substantial series of works in the extreme and remote areas of Antarctica, Central Australia and northern Scotland. With more than 40 one-man exhibitions, including many in public galleries in the UK, France, Italy, Mexico and Australia; his work is held internationally in numerous public galleries and private collections. He spent seven weeks with BAS (British Antarctic Survey) in 2001-2002, largely based in Rothera.

MANDY LEE JANDRELL, COURSE LEADER, BA PHOTOGRAPHY, SOUTHAMPTON SOLENT UNIVERSITY, (EXTERNAL GUEST MEMBER)

Mandy Lee Jandrell is Course Leader at Southampton Solent University on the BA Photography programme. She has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. Solo exhibitions have included: Safari at Bearspace in London (2005); Where the Grass is Green, at Mead Gallery, University of Warwick (2004), and Take Photo Here, at Joao Ferreira Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa, (2004). Group shows have included: Changing Spaces, Photofusion, London (2008); Latitude NYC, NYCams Gallery, New York (2008); Reclaimed, Focalpoint Gallery, Southend-on-sea (2007); Zoo Art Fair, London (2006); 8x8x8 MSP/NYC/LON, at The Soap Factory, in Minneapolis, USA (2006); Green, Winchester Gallery, University of Southampton (2006); London Now, The Arts Center, St. Petersburg, Florida, USA (2005); Mooimarkshow Wien-Johannesburg, at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna (2005); Cinderella, London (2004), UK; X-hibition, Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London (2004); East End Academy, Whitechapel Gallery, London, (2004).

Mandy scours the constructed leisure environment – wildlife parks, zoos, botanical gardens, historical recreations and theme parks – for her subject matter, exploring the pre-packaging of our perceptions of the ‘real’ and the belief systems that sustain them. More recently she has experimented with forms of collage to examine the building of narrative in the constructed image and the relationship between author and reader in the building of meaning. These two distinct ways of working have produced a unique body of work that Mandy will share through showing examples of established projects and recent work in progress. Mandy will be showing new work at an upcoming exhibition in the Southampton Showcase gallery in May 2015.

RICHARD PAUL, SENIOR LECTURER, ­ BA (HONS) PHOTOGRAPHY

MA Fine Art (Central St Martins College of Art & Design), MA Aesthetics and Art Theory (Middlesex University).

Richard Paul‘s work is based on an expanded concept of the photographic still life: the studio, the object, the commodity. This was, in part, an attempt to reconcile the pleasure he took in the challenging, but ultimately banal (but remunerative) experience as a catalogue photographer with his attempt to sustain his art practice. Recently he has been experimenting with stereo photography and video, producing 3D lenticular prints and video slideshows for 3D TV.

Paul is represented by Theodore: Art New York, presenting a solo exhibition ‹ his second at the gallery ­ entitled “You Might Find Yourself” in September 2013. Paul has also exhibited recently in the Netherlands, Norway, Leeds and Boscombe (in December 2013 at SIX projectspace, with a solo presentation of the 3D video slideshow “Sea of Green”).

Paul founded and ran Hoxton Distillery Gallery, London and recently curated “There are no lines here’s only the slow curve of the horizon” at ATP Gallery in London. He regularly writes for “Philosophy of Photography” Journal, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Fine Art at Middlesex University.
