Conference : We the public – Call for abstract

Conference : We the public – Call for abstract

The conference We, The Public invites artists/researchers to present and discuss their work from this perspective and focus on the new forms of interaction and knowledge, methods and tools emerging from artistic research.

du 26 avril 2012 au 27 avril 2012

The majority of artistic research projects impact on public contexts by contributing to both innovative and socially engaged solutions. Artistic research often functions as a bridge between the process of creating artworks and explaining, processing, and positioning them in a public framework.  Artistic research is – more than established fields of research – transdisciplinary and involves the public as central stakeholders.  Artists doing research can answer questions as to the relevance of their research, by explaining its relation to social, civic or collaborative work with other disciplines. Analyzing and communicating with artistic means forms the core of artistic research and offers a multitude of methods and competences to public and professional spheres.

The conference We, The Public invites artists/researchers to present and discuss their work from this perspective and focus on the new forms of interaction and knowledge, methods and tools emerging from artistic research. The topics are open, as are the forms of presentation.

The venue of this first SARN conference in Lucerne, Switzerland will provide participants with different spaces for presentations and enable all to move around and experience different surroundings, as well as time for informal discussions. The conference will open on Thursday evening at the Südpol Centre, 10 minutes from Lucerne’s main train station with keynote speaker Sarat Maharaj, followed by dinner. On Friday morning there will be coffee, croissants and poster presentations at the Palace Hotel, directly on Lake Lucerne. The workshops will take place in smaller venues in the Old Town with ‘lunchboxes’, and all participants will then meet up again for a final discussion at the end of the afternoon.

– The Symposium is looking for process/practice-based artistic research projects to be presented and discussed conceptually and aesthetically. For this reason, abstracts should contain images and/or sounds (max. 10 images and 5 minute sound/video via link) and a text of maximum 500 words.

– Presentations should last 20 minutes.

– Abstracts should contain: Name and Surname of main applicant, title of the contribution, keywords, research problematic, research context, hypotheses, conclusions. A short list of (no more than 10) bibliographic or artworks references. Technical requirements for presentation (workshop or poster presentation) can be included, as well as a list of other researchers involved in the project.

– The abstract is to be sent by email only in PDF form (text and images (max. 10 MB) for sound & video links (max. 5 min.)

– Deadline: January 20th, 2012

– Address: abstracts@sarn.ch

– The board of SARN (see below) will be responsible for reviewing the abstracts.

– Each presentation will be assigned a moderator, who will communicate with the presenter in advance and moderate the discussion.
