The Natural World Museum and the United Nations Environment Programme have joined forces to make an innovative contribution to the citizens of the world through the Art for the Environment initiative. This initiative is designed to utilize the universal language of art as a catalyst to unite people in action and thought and to empower individuals, communities, and leaders to focus on environmental values across social, economic, and political realms.
The Natural World Museum (NWM) is a mobile and global cultural institution that presents art through innovative programs to inspire and engage the public in environmental awareness and action. NWM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the world’s leading environmental agency and environmental arm of the United Nations System, providing leadership and encouraging partnerships for conservation efforts by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations to improve quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on June 5th, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. Each year, for the past 30 years, a different country hosts the international celebration.
Transcending the traditional museum venue, NWM has a mobile and global curatorial program that enables us to bring our mission to broader and more diverse audiences. NWM’s headquarters are located in San Francisco, USA. UNEP’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya. We also have regional office connections via UNEP in six global regions, including Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, and West Asia. In addition to these regional offices, NWM works with the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Culture from the designated cities that host Art for the Environment exhibits.
Art for the Environment exhibitions demonstrate that the fusion of art and environment is a powerful synergistic tool for positive social change. In order to engage the public, we design our exhibits to be interesting and evocative with sensibility in mainstream thought. NWM exhibits feature an eclectic mix of painting, sculpture, photography, multimedia and conceptual installations. The exhibits function as an interface between humans and nature, the story behind the artwork is what makes the environmental message come alive. By providing enlightening visitor experiences, we help create communities of reflective learners, critical thinkers, and creative activists.
