Encounters is a 4-day residential hub that will bring together artists working across any media who are interested in environments, organisms and geologies as part of their creative practice. The residency will take place at ArtHouse Jersey, situated in Chateau Vermont within close proximity to a variety of woodland, wildlife, nature reserves and coastal areas including geological features such as a watery ‘moonscape’. These unique locations will provide a testing ground for creative experiments and interactions aimed at activating dynamic fields of relation with ecosystems, environments and organisms.
The program will consist of practical on-site activities at locations across the Island of Jersey. This will include collaborative listening and experimental writing exercises, performative interventions and sculptural assemblage in addition to self-led activities. The co-constructive and generative nature of the residency will focus on knowledge sharing, testing and exchanging methods in a critical peer group environment. The residency offers artists the benefit of time and space to reflect upon and enrich their practices through a focused period of investigation and experimentation as well as the generation of new methods and approaches that will feedback into their own work.
ArtHouse Jersey will be the base for the residency, providing studio and meeting space for practical work and discussion. En-suite accommodation will be provided by ArtHouse Jersey in the Chateau Vermont. A travel bursary of up to £100 will be available for each artist and evening meals will be provided.
How to apply
The online application requires a short biography, links to examples of work and a short statement explaining why you would like to take part in the residency and how it will benefit your practice.
Artists will be selected based on their level of interest and engagement with the themes and ideas of the DIY, including knowledge and experience of working with environments, organisms and geologies as part of their creative practice. Particular attention will be made to the innovative and unconventional nature of artist methods and approaches. This call is open to artists working in any media and artists from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
