La 2e édition du festival Paysages mouvants est pensée comme un récit collectif qui déroule une histoire des représentations des…
How to regain empathy towards the non-human? Karine Bonneval focuses on the plant otherness, and the complex and specific interactions that link human and plants. What if we could hear the mushrooms grow? Can we exchange our breath with trees? Her pieces explore the possible links between vernacular and technologies. Since 2014, she has worked in collaboration with different teams of scientists, among them the plant ecology research group at Freie Universität run by Matthias Rillig. Jointly, they have developed projects combining innovative research questions and methodologies in bioacoustics, microscopy and thermal representation with sensitive creation involving plants and their environments.
During her Berlin residency in Spring 2018, Karine Bonneval will dedicate her artistic research to the Queen of water plants Victoria amazonica. The results of her explorations will be on display together with other objects, sound and video installations all rooted deeply in science and at the same time dedicated to the fragility and poetry of the encounters and interactions between humans and plants.
Karine Bonneval is « artist in residence » 2018 from April 16th thru May 27th 2018 at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin
Our « artist in residence » program started in 2015 with residency and exhibition of the ukrainian artist Victoriia Teletien, followed in 2017 by the flemish artist Mark Swysen. Karine Bonneval is now the third international artist that stays on the premises of the Botanic Garden for two months, drawing inspiration from the unique location. Works that emerge during her residency will also be on display in this exhibition.
